Los Angeles, 1928. Un matin, Christine dit au revoir à son fils Walter et part au travail. Quand elle rentre à la maison, celui-ci a disparu. Une recherche effrénée s’ensuit et, quelques mois plus tard, un garçon de neuf ans affirmant être Walter lui est restitué. Christine le ramène chez elle mais au fond d’elle, elle sait qu’il n’est pas son fils…
